How duct tape became famous & what was it used for 1910 duct tape was made with adhesive on one side & soaked in rubber, found use in hospitals for binding wounds during World War II Revolite then a division of Johnson & Johnson developed an adhesive tape made from a rubber-based adhesive applied to a durable duck cloth backing. This tape resisted water & was used to seal ammunition cases during that period was originally called duck tape to keep the moisture out of the ammunition cases J & J manufactured the tape & because of its water resistance which emulates water off a ducks back, it was referred to as "duck tape". The ingredients in duct tape which is made typically of 3 different layers. The top layer, which is exposed, is made from a plastic called polythene. Underneath that, there is a middle layer is a rubber-based glue. Due to the high thread count & tight weave, superior quality commercial duct tape has a tensile strength of 40 pounds, whereas lower quality duct tape has a tensile strength of approximately 20 pounds. It's also sometimes called cloth tape because it can relatively easily be torn by hand. It has reasonable strength & water resistance it can be used for indoor & outdoor purposes. The coating retains enough flexibility for the tape to stick to rough, uneven surfaces while it does not compromise the fabric`s ability to be easily torn. Duct tape is also available in varying grades, also known as strengths. A tape`s grade refers to how it's made - the type of adhesive applied & strength of its cloth backing. The more threads are used a tape`s cloth backing, the stronger it will be. Now for the bushcraft survival arena some things duct tape is used for or in as for insistence. Lengths of twisted duct tape can form rope or cord if none is present used also in emergencies to tape up cuts or wounds in the absence of a first aid kit! crafting a crude splint or sling or patching up a rubber raft resealing cans or packets to preserve perishable foods or wrapping your lighter or ferro rod it also helps in your grip while trying to ignite sparks for a fire plus many more things you can also use duct tape for in aid for the outdoors arena. Now based on my years of experience in the bushcraft arena I have used many brands of duct tape but I myself prefer to use a brand called Gorilla Duct Tape that was introduced in I think back in 2005 & won Popular Science`s Best of What`s New in 2006 sold by Gorilla Glue Incorporated a company based out of Sharonville, Ohio. I personally think throughout my years of using many different brands I choose to use Gorilla brand duct tape in all my uses for all. again, this is based on my use`s in the field and abroad.
